Knowing how to identify and treat frostbite

The temperatures in Chicago today are historic and punishing. With that, it’s important to know how to identify and treat frostbite.

Usually frostbite can be treated, but if not taken care of it can lead to “permanent numbness or tingling, joint stiffness, or muscle weakness.” It has even led to amputation in certain cases.

One loses color and feeling when experiencing frostbite. Areas that are most commonly impacted are the “nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers or toes.” If you’re affected, make sure to apply warm water on the affected area for 20-30 minutes and elevate any affected limb. Do not put dry heat on, or massage, the area. Also keep off of your feet or toes if they are affected. Stay away from drinking alcohol (the Malort can wait) and do not break any blisters.
