Elle just put together a tremendous archive of denim spanning over 50 years. Starting in 1950, the publication has shown off what was “in” for jeans for that year.

Gen X’ers are widely considered to have started popping out from their mothers in 1965. Here’s how jeans looked when America’s most apathetic generation started forming.

For Millennials, stiff denim with big, flashy belts were all the rage when they began sprouting up in 1981.

And for Gen Z, who started their path to domination in the late 90’s, they came into a world where denim looked like this. Oh, how far we’ve come.
